The students of the two engineering degrees of Mondragon Unibertsitatea taught at the EKO Galarreta Campus in Hernani (Degree in Energy Engineering and Degree in Ecotechnologies Engineering in Industrial Processes - Green Manufacturing) - have had the opportunity to visit the hydroelectric power plant of Fagollaga. During the first year of engineering, the students have worked on subjects such as physics, mathematics, energy and sustainability or computer basics, subjects that are somehow linked to the activity of the plant they visited.

The Fagollaga hydroelectric power plant is located in the Urumea basin, in Ereñotzu. It is a small hydroelectric power plant that has been in operation for more than 100 years. In 1988 some improvements were made, but there are still some machines and parts that are still working since its commissioning. The 6m drop in the river at that point means that the power plant has the capacity to generate 100 kW. In 2018 the owner of the power plant retired and a transfer was made to the Goiener collective through the company Nafarcoop.

The engineering departments of Mondragon Unibertsitatea have a series of activities similar to this visit that allow students to learn firsthand the needs of society and focus their professional projection towards a direction. The energy transition is playing a leading role in the current situation, so that the group of teachers from the Galarreta campus invited a representative of GoiEner to give a talk at the university days before visiting the plant.

GoiEner is a cooperative project for the generation and consumption of renewable energy. The ultimate goal they pursue is to generate the amount of energy needed to supply the consumption of their members, and their goal is to do so through renewable generation. They currently have more than 17,000 members and almost 21,000 contracts and part of the energy consumed by this community is generated in the small Fagollaga Hernani power plant.

Galarreta Campus

The Galarreta campus in Hernani of Mondragon Unibertsitatea will soon be 10 years old, and throughout this journey there have been many activities, lectures and visits that have been organized for the more than 1500 students who have passed through the campus. The campus has research and transfer activities, as well as courses for professionals. However, the main activity of the campus is focused on formal training, specifically in two engineering degrees and three university master's degrees that can be taken in the dual itinerary to combine studies and work.
