Ainhoa Artola, Iker Bermeosolo, Izaro Bilbao, Aiala Elejalde and Garazi Zuazo developed the project presented to the competition when they were students of the Degree in Biomedical Engineering of Mondragon Unibertsitatea. At the moment, some of the group members are working and others are studying a master's degree. Aiala, Ainhoa and Garazi are still studying, the latter two are studying the Master's Degree in Biomedical Technology at Mondragon Unibertsitatea.

A project that has become a finalist in the competition

Leukemia is the type of cancer with the highest mortality rate worldwide, especially in children, 80% of which are acute lymphoblastic leukemia (LLA). Although the incidence of this disease is low, its symptomatology is similar to other common diseases and makes diagnosis difficult or delayed.

Early diagnosis of the disease is necessary for the effectiveness of treatment and to increase the patient's survival probability. That's why this group of students has developed a software called LLAssist that allows early diagnosis through LLA image processing and Machine Learning techniques. In addition, they have developed a portable device to perform tests in a simple way and to be able to make diagnoses in primary care health centres. That's exactly the key to this solution, to provide an immediate diagnosis at very low cost and without the need for sophisticated laboratories.

Among the 10 finalists

10 projects reached the final of the II Edition of the Logicalis Innovation Challenge and the project of the students of Mondragon Unibertsitatea was one of them. The awards ceremony was held in Madrid at the end of 2023 and our students valued the achievement very positively.

Congratulations, team!

Let's see if the project goes ahead and you can manage to generate that benefit to society, good luck!
