Representatives of the company Kiro Grifols visited the Higher Polytechnic School of Mondragon Unibertsitatea on 3 April to offer a speech to the students of the first year of the Master’s Degree in Biomedical Technologies. The purpose of this presentation was to present the stages and challenges of the process of developing a start-up in the bio-sanitary environment. Kiro Grifols, a company based in Arrasate, Spain, specialises in the design and development of automated systems for bio-sanitary environments, with expertise in the precise creation of cytostatics (chemotherapy) and other intravenous preparations. Currently, it welcomes students of the Higher Polytechnic School during the preparation of their End-of-Course/End-of-Master’s Projects, as well as the Dual practices in the study-work programme.

A cross-sectional presentation

The Higher Polytechnic School organises presentations on relevant topics with external speakers. For this reason, through the presentation, the Faculty of Engineering sought to raise awareness among students about current regulations in the field of medical devices, in which regulation is stricter than in other industrial sectors. To this end, the students of the Master’s Degree in Biomedical Technologies were visited by Borja Lizari, Director-General and Promoter of the Kiro Robotics project (currently Kiro Grifols) since its inception in 2010, with extensive experience in the equipment and automation sector. Borja Lizari exposed to the students the decision-making process that must be faced when creating a company and the opportunities offered by the current biomedical sector. In this sense, topics such as types of investments, regulation, market and competition analysis, or the composition of the work team, were put on the table.
