Mondragon Unibertsitatea goes a step further in terms of sustainability and installs 263 solar-res panels on the Arrasate campus in Garaia

The installation is expected to generate 17% of the energy required by the building's activity. This action is expected to cover 4% of Mondragon Unibertsitatea's total energy needs.

Mondragon Unibertsitatea is once again demonstrating its commitment to sustainability and has installed a total of 263 solar panels on the Arrasate campus, specifically at the headquarters of the Garaia Technology Park. With this installation, which was completed in January, the training centre aims to be able to generate energy equivalent to the annual consumption of 35 homes using renewable energy sources and around 17% of the energy consumed by the building.

The roof of the building has a total surface area of 1,700 square metres and practically the entire surface area has been used for mounting the solar panels. In total, there have been 263 panels, each with a power of 455 W, with which the Polytechnic School of Mondragon Unibertsitatea will self-supply the energy needs of the campus itself. The technicians from the Building Management team and the Environment team at the Polytechnic School, as well as some members of the Electrical Energy research group, have taken part in the process of studying and installing the panels. This collaboration between different profiles has made it possible to parameterise the installation in such a way that in the medium and long term it will be possible to use the generation and consumption data for the modelling, control and creation of intelligent equipment for the buildings of the future.

With this installation of 120 MWh of installed power, the Polytechnic School expects to produce around 130,000 kWh of electricity, which would represent between 14-17% of the annual consumption of the Garaia building. Without going any further, the average consumption of a home in the Basque Country is 3,370 kWh per year, so by doing this calculation the centre will be able to generate the equivalent energy per year of 35 homes.

This project also forms part of the MONDRAGÓN Corporation's policy of energy autonomy and the reduction of traditional energy dependence in favour of sustainable energy sources. The installation has been developed by the KREAN architecture studio.
