Mondragon Unibertsitatea is part of the Basque Science, Technology and Innovation Network of the Basque Country, and recently, the SPRI Group has promoted the launch of the Basque Digital Innovation Hub (BDIH), an initiative that aims to make available to Basque companies (SMEs and large companies) the modern technological equipment available to the members of the Basque Science, Technology and Innovation Network. Within this framework, the Basque Government has launched the call for BDIH Konexio, grants, a programme that aims to provide Basque companies with access to state-of-the-art technological equipment to face the challenges of digital manufacturing and thus contribute to their competitiveness.

Industry 4.0 and the digitisation of SMEs and large companies require more knowledge-intensive and higher-value manufacturing activities. For this reason, the BDIH network offers specific knowledge and services to companies in the fields of Additive Manufacturing, Flexible and Collaborative Robotics, Smart and Connected Machines, Cybersecurity, Data-Driven Solutions, and Advanced Materials.

The BDIH network is composed of more than twenty entities and represents over 100 state-of-the-art technological assets, with infrastructures that will make it easier for the Basque industrial fabric to get on the Industry 4.0 train.

Technological equipment and services that Mondragon Unibertsitatea makes available to companies

Additive Manufacturing:

The service focuses on two areas:

  • 1. Composite printing with continuous fibre. The MarkTwo (Markforged) is a printer – the only on the market – that allows working with continuous fibre composites (carbon, glass, Kevlar, etc.) with high rigidity (40 GPa) and resistance (700 MPa). The print volume is 320 mm x 132 mm x 154 mm. Structural optimisation based on finite element simulations, as well as topological optimisation strategies, are the ideal complement for the development of new advanced products.
  • 2. Manufacture of prototype moulds (Infusion, RTM, etc.) and tools for composites. Two medium-sized/large print volume machines are available, as well as a plastic extrusion printer (JCR 1000, Sicnova), with a printing volume of 1000 mm x 600 mm x 600 mm, and an SLA printer (LC Magna, Photocentric), with a printing volume of 510 mm x 280 mm x 350 mm.

Flexible and Collaborative Robotics:

  • Flexible multi-position robotic cell for 3D dimensional and surface inspection. This flexible robotic inspection cell offers the ability to perform dimensional measurements and surface inspections or a combination of both on both matte and glossy volumetric parts. The approximate volume of the part is 50mm x 50mm x 100mm. Depending on the technology, it can reach 50 mm x 50 mm x 200 mm. It has a human-machine interface (HMI) that facilitates the programming of inspection requirements, allowing SMEs to have a feasibility study of 3D and 2D inspection technologies in a reduced time. The technology used is suitable for use in production lines.

Smart and Connected Machines:

Digital grinding: We offer performance analysis services and optimal wheel selection through process monitoring. Similarly, we define process windows that ensure the surface integrity of the piece. We also offer continuous training courses in the field of abrasive processes. We make or techologcal equipment available to companies:

  • SN 50/100 tangential grinding machine
  • METODES optimal grinding wheel selection software
  • Sensors for process monitoring: power, force, vibration, position, thermography, laser, surface roughness, etc.
  • Laboratory for the measurement of surface defects, accredited by ENAC: microscopy, macroscopy, profilometry, etc.

Advanced Materials

We offer design and development services for materials, manufacturing processes, coating and surface solutions, advanced bonding, and materials and processes in the circular economy. We make or techologcal equipment available to companies:

  • Fretting unit: contact fatigue
  • Integrated machining cell
  • 400-tonne mechanical servo press
  • Vacuum furnace and cold crucible for the fusion of aeronautical superalloys.
