Mondragon Unibertsitatea, a university renowned for its technological and innovative approach, and AR Racking, a leading company in the European market in storage solutions with its head office in Zamudio, Spain, have ratified their collaboration agreement with the official visit made by representatives of both entities to the AR Lab. This AR Racking classroom is located in the facilities of the Mechanical Design Laboratory of the Higher Polytechnic School of Mondragon Unibertsitatea and is dedicated to research and collaborative development.

The meeting was attended by Eric Arana and Carmelo Bilbao (President and CEO of the Arania Group), Iñaki Arriola (Managing Director of AR Racking), Pablo Montes (Technical Director), Javier Ruiz (Product Manager), and Ibon Larraondo (Product Engineer). On behalf of Mondragon Unibertsitatea, Vicente Atxa (Dean), Carlos García (Rector of the Higher Polytechnic School) and Roberto Uribeetxeberria (Research and Transfer Coordinator) participated in the visit. A large part of the R&D team of the Higher Polytechnic School of Mondragon Unibertsitatea was also present, developing the research activity in the classroom, led by Ibai Ulacia and Jon Larrañaga, responsible for the Mechanical Design Laboratory of Mondragon Unibertsitatea, which houses the AR Lab classroom.

The AR Lab is a permanent classroom and constitutes the space where basic and applied research programmes, Doctoral Theses, and specialised training are developed. The classroom is also equipped with a laboratory for experimental tests suitable to carry out, on the one hand, systematic product tests for compliance with the standard, and, on the other hand, virtual tests oriented to the simulation and generation of new knowledge.

State-of-the-art test bench

The AR Lab classroom, framed in the research level “Development of prototypes and test benches” of the mechanical design laboratory and dedicated to the development of prototype and machines experimental characterisation, has a pioneering test bench in the sector. The test bench of the AR Lab integrates various test areas for struts, connectors, racks, stringers and other components, with a maximum capacity of 80 tonnes.

The synergy created with the AR Lab will make possible the real-time increase of Mondragon Unibertsitatea’s know-how and the personnel linked to the institution, opening new paths for research and training.

Joint work lines

The collaborative project materialised in the AR Lab classroom, which began to take shape in 2017 and whose first tests were carried out for the first time in 2019 after a detailed commissioning, is joined by two other lines of collaboration that connect Mondragon Unibertsitatea and AR Racking. Both entities are working together in a research project on digitalisation of sheet metal profiling processes, as well as in a project linked to the inspection of welding in stringers.

The different lines of collaboration highlight the solid commitment of Mondragon Unibertsitatea to the development and proximity to the business world. With this new agreement, 22 companies have already signed collaborative research agreements with Mondragon Unibertsitatea, a clear example of the strength of the collaborative research model promoted by the university.
