Big data, the science that manages the millions of data sets created every minute on the Internet, is one of the most debated issues of the moment. When using Internet or different digital platforms that are featured in it, users leave a mark on their personal information, whether consciously or unconsciously. Thus, many companies take advantage of this personal information of the users in order to design strategies to be able to persuade them and increase their business success.

Nevertheless, Enaitz Ezpeleta, professor and researcher of the Data Analysis and Cybersecurity group of Mondragon Unibertsitatea, defends that big data may be beneficial for society, as long as it is applied correctly. He argues that public organisations and institutions could make use of the aforementioned data to be able to move alongside society and, where possible, ahead.

The good use of big data is seen, for example, in the strategy adopted by the experts in Montreal, which have created a platform with the aim of returning the initiative to citizens. They seek to reunite society, so that a company, irrespective of how powerful it may be, is not able to determine what the people can do. It is about cooperating with society and seeking to increase people’s quality of life.
