What would you like the company in which you develop your professional career to be like? was the question posed by Pio Agirre and Luis Mari Imaz to the Master's students of the Higher Polytechnic School at the beginning of the lecture on Human Enterprise. Both are members of Arizmediarrietaren Lagunak Elkartea (ALE) and have relevant professional experience (see below). ALE is an association that promotes reflection on new socio-entrepreneurial formulas based on Arizmendiearrieta's ideas and values and that promotes the areas of action of cooperatives, bringing them closer to citizens through cooperation.

Some people preferred to earn a lot of money and do what others asked them to do, there were those who preferred to decide on the activity and evolution of the company, or even those who preferred the company to be generous with the environment... The model promoted by Arizmendiarrieta is based on the participation of the individual member in the company, on involvement and fair distribution, and also has a strong sense of solidarity with other similar co-operatives and society in general. For this reason, the conference focused on co-operative principles such as democratic organisation, labour sovereignty, participation in management, solidarity in remuneration, inter-cooperation and social transformation, among others.

Strategic line

This conference on Human Enterprise is part of the strategic challenge set by the Engineering Faculty to disseminate cooperative values in its students. The aim of this type of action is to raise awareness among young people, and society in general, of more democratic, participatory and supportive ways of organising work.

The speakers:

  • Luis Mari Imaz has 36 years of professional experience in the cooperative world. He began working as a financier, then as a bank and commercial manager, and finally as Managing Director. His contribution as Managing Director of Tajo S.Coop and Mondragon Assembly has been marked by his achievements in international expansion and innovation strategy, as during his tenure several production plants were opened in Europe, Latin America and Asia.
  • Pío Aguirre He developed his career in Laboral Kutxa with responsibilities in the areas of branches, marketing, private banking and internationalisation. He was also financial manager of Ulma-Portugal and worked in the United States for MONDRAGON International. He was also General Manager of Elkargi and director of several entities such as SPRI, Policlínica Gipuzkoa or Euskadiko Pentsioak, among others.

Both are now retired and work with Arizmendiarrietaren Lagunak to promote the co-operative movement among young people and society in general.

Eskerrik asko to both of you for having passed on your knowledge and experience to our students. Segi horrela.
