The best scientific paper presented at the IEEE Vehicular Power and Propulsion Conference 2020 was produced by research staff from Mondragon Goi Eskola Politeknikoa and the Ikerlan technology centre. The purpose of the international meeting was to create spaces for the exchange of knowledge between innovation agents and professionals working on new technological applications in the field of energy and the propulsion of electrified vehicles.

Josu Olmos, a PhD student at Mondragon Unibertsitatea, together with Iosu Aizpuru and Iñigo Gandiaga (his thesis supervisors and researchers at Mondragon Unibertsitatea and Ikerlan respectively) and in collaboration with Dimas Lopez, Xabier Larrea and Txonin Nieva (researchers at CAF Power & Automation) presented the work that was recognised as the Best paper Award at the conference. With the title Cost-Effective Integration of Energy Storage Systems in Railway Vehicles, the authors presented a new techno-economic analysis aimed at future railway applications, with innovations that integrate batteries and diesel engines to move towards more sustainable mobility.

Strong commitment

Mondragon Goi Eskola Politeknikoa and Ikerlan continue to maintain a clear commitment to research and innovation in the field of energy, one of the strategic themes of the RIS3 promoted by the European Union and the Basque Government. The research groups of both institutions frequently work together and address technological challenges for both local companies and society in general. In the case of Josu Olmos's doctoral thesis, its application is part of the joint project that Ikerlan is working on with CAF Power & Automation and is supported by the Basque Government's Bikaintek Programme.

Josu is currently in the second year of his doctoral thesis and has previously studied Renewable Energies and Smart Power Grid Control.

Congratulations to the whole team!
