Asier Lazcano

Master’s Degree in Biomedical Technologies, 1st year

I did the 2016-2017 year in Lodz, Poland. I spent 9 months there – the best 9 months of my life. The experience I lived there has been essential for my personal growth. I now feel that I am a more open person. There, I made friends from many parts of the world. I learnt something from each of these people and brought this knowledge with me.

In Lodz, I carried out the project “VISION-BASED GESTURE RECOGNITION FOR HUMAN-COMPUTER INTERACTION (HCI)”. This project is aimed at people with any type of disability that prevents them from using the keyboard or the mouse to operate a computer.

I developed a program that allows these people to use the functions of the computer (Internet, Windows applications, etc.) by voice commands. In addition, by using the webcam, the computer is able to recognise the user’s face. Each time the user moves their head, the mouse cursor reproduces their movement on the screen. The user will activate the “click” command by smiling, thus having the option to click on any point of the screen that they want.

Therefore, the user will be able to use the computer by using face movements, gestures and voice recognition, without the need for a mouse or keyboard.
