Doctorate programme tutor assigned to each student

As stated in the doctorate admission agreement, the Doctorate Programme Academic Committee (CAPD) will assign tutors to the doctoral students. The tutor will be a doctor with accredited research experience, whose functions will include:

  • Designing, planning, and supervising the Personalised Activities Document, and coordinating its consistency and suitability with the director.
  • Carrying out periodic monitoring of training activities together with the director through a reasoned report, helping the doctoral student identify and design their research plan, supporting later improvements and details if deemed necessary, and concisions incorporated thereto.
  • Overseeing the doctoral student's interaction with the CAPD.
  • Facilitating access to the infrastructure necessary to achieve the objectives and targets laid out in the student's general work plan.
  • Ensuring that the doctoral student is familiar with the doctorate programme's Academic and Administrative Guide and the standards for presenting and defending their theses, as well as the maximum periods available to develop their theses.
  • Others assigned by the CAPD.

Thesis director and/or co-director

In addition, as per the doctorate programme admission agreement, a thesis director will be assigned. The director may or may not coincide with the tutor, and will be a doctor with accredited research experience. Their functions are:

  • Advising and orienting the design and monitoring of the Research Plan's development together with the tutor through the planning of regular meetings with the doctoral student and the tutor.
  • Designing, planning, and supervising training activities in coordination with the tutor, and ensuring their consistency and suitability.
  • Facilitating the doctoral student with all teams and infrastructure that the university makes available to doctoral students in order for them to carry out their research activities.
  • Providing an annual evaluation of the research plan together with the tutor through a reasoned report.
  • Encouraging and supporting the student in the development of their own abilities in terms of research, working independently, and critical analysis of information.
  • Fostering the student's deeper understanding of their research topic through guidance from experts in the field, and interaction with academic peers.
  • Reading, correcting, and commenting on the scientific CONTRIBUTIONS derived from the thesis project.
  • Ensuring that the doctoral student is familiar with the academic and administrative requirements for defending their thesis, as well as the corresponding time limits and periods for the entire process.
  • Others assigned by the CAPD.

These described functions are included in a formal commitment that is signed by the university, the doctoral student, the tutor, and the director, which also includes a conflict resolution procedure and rights associated with intellectual and industrial property. If necessary, a confidentiality protocol should be signed as a separate document.
