On September 3, the Faculty of Humanities and Education Sciences of Mondragon University will hold a conference entitled ‘Denok gara (gure arloko) hizkuntza irakasle’ (‘We are all language teachers (in our field)’). A team of teachers and researchers from the faculty has written a book entitled ‘Arloko alfabetatzea hezkuntza eleanitzetan’ (‘Content area literacy in multilingual education’), which includes “some bases and strategies for working in an integrated way on language and area in multilingual education systems.” The event will take place on September 3 in the IdeiEnea building on the Aretxabaleta campus.

As the organization explains, “teaching in multilingual contexts is always a challenge, but it becomes even more complex when the teaching-learning process is carried out in a language that is not the students’ home language and that is a minority language.” The conference will analyze the keys to responding to this challenge. Among other questions, the speakers will try to answer the following: Students must master the language and forms of discourse of each subject, but how can we as teachers contribute to this path? How can we contribute to the construction of the linguistic tools that students need to understand and express science, the social field or mathematics? What kind of methodological practices and approaches influence the multilingual context of disciplinary literacy?

In this conference, participants will reflect on disciplinary literacy, framed in a multilingual approach. Solid academic knowledge will be combined with real practices to share experiences and understand teaching-learning processes in greater depth. The conference will include reflection and transformation, a theoretical approach, the results of research and open dialogue with teachers.

The book ‘Arloko alfabetatzea hezkuntza eleanitzetan’

This book was produced as part of the ALPHA and ELKARHITZ projects. It is divided into two main parts. The first section explains what content area literacy is and specifies its components. The strata of content area literacy are also characterized: textual genres, cognitive discourse functions and content area vocabulary. The second section presents the methodological bases for the development of disciplinary literacy. The integration and scaffolding of literacy is proposed at three levels: curricular, didactic materials and interaction. This book not only presents concepts and knowledge related to literacy at the international level, but also provides the contributions of the authors as well as various tools that can be used to develop disciplinary literacy that have come about through the ALPHA and ELKARHITZ projects.
