What is a PHD?

A PhD is the highest university qualification, culminating in the award of a PhD. It is an official qualification, valid throughout the country and recognised within the European Higher Education Area.

To obtain this qualification, it is essential to demonstrate the ability to carry out original research independently, to an internationally recognised standard of quality. This process culminates in the writing and defence of a doctoral thesis before a panel of doctors who are experts in the discipline, who will evaluate and determine its adequacy.

This training will be organised through courses, seminars and other activities aimed at research training and will include the preparation and presentation of the corresponding doctoral thesis, consisting of an original research project.

Doctoral training is organised through programmes that offer cross-disciplinary and specific training in line with the field of doctoral study. Therefore, the purpose of the PhD programme is to provide advanced training in research techniques to doctoral students.

However, the main activity of doctoral students is research. The programmes include various training activities that doctoral students must complete during their time in the programme. There is no requirement to pass ECTS credits.

To be admitted to doctoral studies at the Faculty, applicants must apply within the deadline established for each academic year. Once admitted, students must formally enrol, which must be renewed annually until the doctoral thesis is presented and deposited.

During their first year in the programme, doctoral students must draw up a Research Plan and a Personalised Training Plan, which will be recorded in the Annual Self-Assessment Report prepared by the doctoral student. Both plans will be regularly reviewed by the tutor and thesis supervisor and evaluated annually by the Doctoral Programme Academic Committee.

The PhD Programme is managed and coordinated by:

  • The PhD Programme Coordinator and
  • The members of the Academic Committee of the PhD Programme, composed of:
    • 6 doctors from different departments and from the research areas of Advanced Management and Social Economy (Faculty of Business Studies-MIK and Faculty of Humanities and Education Sciences-LANKI).
    • The Vice-Rector for Research at Mondragon University and
    • The PhD Academic Secretariat.
