Your health, in your hands (and on your feet)

As part of this year’s Health Week, we want to send out a clear message: take the stairs!

Taking advantage of this year's health week, in addition to offering healthy breakfasts or lunches, we have launched a campaign promoting the use of stairs.

Often, out of habit or for the sake of convenience, we take the lift even when we’re only going up one or two floors. With this campaign, we want to break that habit and encourage the university community to choose to walk.

Why is this simple gesture so highly recommended? Here are the main benefits of taking the stairs:

  • Cardiovascular health: it increases your heart rate, improving blood flow and strengthening the heart.
  • Muscle strength: it is a natural and effective way to tone the muscles in your legs and glutes.
  • Helps prevent various illnesses
  • Time management: rather than waiting for the lift, using the stairs is quicker for going up a few floors.

It is important to realise that not all these benefits come simply from moving from one place to another. Stairs, in themselves, are a form of exercise. During your study or work session, you can take a 5-minute break to walk up and down the stairs; this will help counteract the time you spend sitting and get your heart pumping without needing anything else. Stairs are, therefore, free gyms on our campus that we can use at any time.

So, we can say that health is all about movement. From today onwards, remember: stairs aren’t just a way to get somewhere, they’re an opportunity to improve your health.

What are you waiting for? Get into the habit of living healthily!! Because your health is in your hands (or feet)!!
