Mondragon University’s renovated Dorleta building, home of the Faculty of Humanities and Education Sciences, has won the Spanish Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism BEAU 2021 competition. The building, located on the Eskoriatza campus, was one of the 20 best works of architecture in this event. A total of 70 architectural works made it to the finals of this competition. The Dorleta building was inaugurated at the beginning of this academic year, on September 18, 2020.

The Dorleta building is the result of a long participatory process in which both students and workers took part. The architectural team BeSTe was in charge of both the participatory process and the architectural design. The directors of the team were Faculty professor and architect Itziar Imaz and architect Ibon Salaberria.

The remodeling of the Dorleta building took place as part of the educational transformation project promoted by the Faculty of Humanities and Education Sciences; indeed, this innovative pedagogical project was central to the process. The remodeling and expansion of the Dorleta building has provided new spaces for creation, experimentation and research, and included not only the renovation of the interior (the original building was built in 1976), but also the creation of new spaces thanks to an annex added to the façade. In addition, new premises measuring 1,800 square meters were built next to the building and the surrounding area was remodeled. The expansion and remodeling project involved an investment of 6 million euros.
