All systems go for the 15th Huhezinema Basque Short Film Festival

From March 30 to April 1, Aretxabaleta will be the meeting point for Basque short film makers. Music is the theme of this 15th year of the festival.

All systems are go for the Huhezinema Basque Short Film Festival, which is organized by 4th-year Audiovisual Communication students at Mondragon University. The 15th annual festival will be held from March 30 to April 1.

This year, now that the festival can once again be held in person, the organizers have scheduled conferences, screenings and events for all audiences, including an FX effects workshop, trikipoteo and musical concerts. All activities will take place in Aretxabaleta, some in Arkupe Hall and others in the town square.

The organizers of this year’s festival want to give special importance to music, therefore, video clips will have special showings and awards. The awards ceremony will take place on April 1 at 7:00 p.m. in Arkupe Hall.

March 30

  • 10:00-1:00 Alumni meeting (Arkupe).
  • 3:00-3:30 Premiere screening of the short film Nor ari da grabatzen? (Arkupe).
  • 3:30-6:00 BaconsFX workshop (Arkupe and town square).
  • 6:30-8:00 Trikipoteo (Aretxabaleta bars).

March 31

  • 11:00-1:00 Masterclass - Aranzazu Calleja (Arkupe).
  • 3:00-4:00 MU Section 1 (Arkupe).
  • 4:30-5:30 MU Section 2 (Arkupe).
  • 5:45-6:15 Video Clip Section 1 (Arkupe).
  • 6:30-7:00 Video Clip Section 2 (Arkupe).

April 1

  • 3:00-4:30 Official Section 1 (Arkupe).
  • 5:00-6:30 Official Section 2 (Arkupe).
  • 7:00-8:00 Awards ceremony (Arkupe).
  • 8:00-9:30 Refreshments (outside Arkupe).
  • 9:30-11:30 Concerts in the town square.

AWARDS

Again this year, the festival will award numerous prizes:

  • Huhezinema Award: €800 for the best film in Basque. The prize will be awarded by the official jury.
  • MU Awards:
    • Best Fiction: €200
    • Best Sound: €100
    • Audience Award €100
    • Best Photography: Ogeita4 will provide equipment worth €1,500 to record a short film that will then be presented at Huhezinema 2023.
    • K-Saria: Paid passes for the Basque film club circuit.
  • Vertigo Prize: €400. The prize will be awarded by a jury made up of students from Mondragon University. The film must have been produced and distributed without public subsidy.
  • Audience Award: €300
  • Mundukide Prize: €700. The prize will go to the best short film with a theme related to Human Rights and Social Justice out of all the films presented in the three sections. The prize will be awarded by the official jury together with a representative from Mundukide.
  • Best Sound: €300. The prize will be awarded by the official jury to the short film with the best editing, recording and sound design.
  • Video clip prizes: First prize, €300; second prize, €200; and third prize, €100.
