CICE2020, Investigación en materiales y sistemas estacionarios de almacenamiento de energía para la transición energética project has been funded by the Industry Department of the Basque Government, within the financial aid call collaborative research grant program in strategic areas - ELKARTEK. Reference: KK-2020/00078.

Description

The main and priority purpose of the ELKARTEK CIC energiGUNE 2020 (CICe2020) project is to research new materials for their integration into future energy storage systems for stable application that will contribute to the worldwide energy transition in progress.

The role of energy storage is considered to be fundamental in the energy transformation process and work is taking place to develop a framework of energy storage strategies in order to place promising technologies on the market and detect the main challenges they face for effective implementation.

This is why the CICe2020 project has based its activity on the transformation of the electricity sector and on the improvement of efficiency in the use of energy. The aim is therefore to create new opportunities for the products and services that Basque companies offer at global level. And in order to do this, work will take place on the generation of disruptive knowledge based on materials that surpass the state of the art of current storage technologies for electrochemical and thermal energy applied specifically in two areas:

  • Decarbonization of electricity production through the development of stable, sustainable and economically competitive electrochemical storage technologies in addition to lithium-ion that allow an increase in renewable generation.
  • Electrification of the heat and cold generation sector (industrial and domestic) through the development of thermal energy storage technologies to improve the current performance, features and cost of industrial and domestic heat pumps from renewable energy sources.
