The Basque Government has approved the dual degrees of the Basque universities according to the Unibasq certification system for dual training and has accredited 15 Mondragon Unibertsitatea degrees, making it the leading Basque university in terms of dual degrees in its offer. Specifically, he has certified 10 undergraduate degrees and 5 Master’s degrees, which Mondragon Unibertsitatea had submitted to obtain the official degree or dual itinerary seal and which the university offers under its own dual model. This acknowledgment supports the experience accumulated by the University in terms of dual modality, previously called study-work programme, which has, for 50 years, enabled its students to combine periods in the training centre with paid stays in the company, becoming the pioneering Basque university in the application of this type of model.

The results achieved during this time also demonstrate the success of the model: 80% of the students of Mondragon Unibertsitatea who have studied in the dual model (undergraduate or Master’s degrees) have continued working in the company at the end of their studies.

Specifically, the fifteen degrees that have obtained the dual degree seal of the Basque Government correspond to nine degrees of the Higher Polytechnic School (eight of which offer the possibility of studying in a dual itinerary, plus one given in dual format only) and one degree of the Business School. In turn, the postgraduate degrees consist of five Master’s degrees taught at the Higher Polytechnic School of the University. To date, a sixth Master’s degree in the field of education is currently in the process of verification for the achievement of the dual certificate. It is the Master’s Degree in Teacher Training for Compulsory Secondary Education and Baccalaureate Teaching, Professional Training, and Language Teaching.

Dual official seal

The certification system implemented by the Basque Government through Unibasq is a pioneer in the State in the accreditation of dual degrees, that is, establishing the criteria to be met by university centres to ensure that their degrees may receive the official recognition of dual training. The first degrees with this certification will come into force in the academic year 2018-2019.

In broad lines, in order to achive the certificate, the undergraduate and master’s degrees should combine academic training with a close relationship with the production environment, through the collaboration of the university and the companies that participate both in the development of the training plan and in the tutoring of their stay in the company and the financing of the students.

Students should complete a minimum of 25% of the degree in dual form in the case of the degrees, and 40% in the case of the Master’s degrees, and the End-of-Course Project or end-of-Master’s Project should be done in collaboration with an external entity.

Pioneers in dual training

Mondragon Unibertsitatea has offered its students the dual training model for 50 years, which makes it a pioneer of this model. In fact, its experience in dual training dates back to 1966, following the creation of Alecop, a cooperative formed mostly by students belonging to the centres that currently integrate Mondragon Unibertsitatea and which offers students the possibility of alternate study and work. Over the years, thousands of students have combined study and work in this model. The 50 years of experience of this cooperative have enabled Mondragon Unibertsitatea to develop a pioneering dual training model in the Basque Country and Spain, which was replicated by other centres and has provided its students with the opportunity to combine their studies with a professional activity.

In fact, the university’s practical orientation has turned it into an entity in a permanent connection with the profiessional world, as well as the companies and organisations in the surrounding areas. For that reason, the university has always given a great importance to the dual training in alternation and practices and projects in companies and organisations, encouraging students to establish a contact with the professional reality during their years of study.

In total, 300 of the 3750 undergraduate students of Mondragon Unibertsitatea have chosen this academic course for this type of degree, which combines classroom and company training (22% of the students are enrolled in dual degrees, comprising 8% of the total). In the case of university Master’s degrees, 165 of the 590 students have opted for dual training (they account for 73% of students enrolled in Master’s degrees and 22% of the total).
