The objective of the STEMotiv project was to understand and influence Compulsory Secondary Education students’ interest in and motivation for STEM subjects. Influence positively, that is, spark the motivation of students in Compulsory Secondary Education for STEM subjects. In addition, the project placed special emphasis on motivating girls. The students in this project were high school freshmen.

Five schools were involved in the project: Mutriko High School (Mutriku), Zumaiena (Zumaia), Herrikide (Tolosa), the Zubiri Manteo High School (Donostia) and the Salbatore Mitxelena School (Zarautz).

Regarding the working procedure, the researchers gave questionnaires to the Compulsory Secondary Education students in order to analyze their interests. Subsequently, and in collaboration with the schools, a STEM project was carried out at each school. After taking these projects to the classroom, students were asked to complete the questionnaire again. The objective was to see whether or not the projects influenced the students’ motivation for STEM contents. In general, the results demonstrated that such projects do have a positive influence on students’ motivation.

In addition to Mondragon University, Ikaslan Gipuzkoa and Vicomtech also participated in the STEMotiv project, which was carried out thanks to the Talent-Learning 2020 program of the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa.
