On 6-7 May, the 1st European PBL Workshop, took place at the European University of Madrid, on the held Villaviciosa de Odón campus. At the event, Nuria Herrero, coordinator of the degree in Engineering in Ecotechnology and Industrial Processes, and Javier Oyarzun, coordinator of the degree in Energy Engineering, presented the PBL model of Mondragon Unibertsitatea. The congress brought together several universities in Europe specialising in PBL models, each of which had 15 minutes to explain how this methodology is applied in their respective centres.

Later, in different worktables, the representatives of the participating universities got together to discuss aspects of the application of the PBL methodology regarding the participation of companies in the PBL projects and the treatment of diversity and the management of conflicts in PBL teams. These worktables were implemented with the aim of publishing the conclusions obtained in this workshop in future conferences related to the PBL methodology.

The Higher Polytechnic School of Mondragon opted for the PBL methodology several years ago, and Project-Based Learning is fully internalised in its teaching processes. It is a methodology originally from Northern Europe consisting of learning by facing practical problems.  Based on the development of knowledge, PBL aims to raise the demand of students to a higher level in which they can apply this knowledge to a real environment. Thus, the students establish the objectives that they intend to achieve with each project in line with the learning outcomes they pursue, organise their work to meet these objectives, and with that, propose a solution to the problem posed.

The Higher Polytechnic School offers a practical learning mode, and as a centre specialising in the PBL methodology, organises the PBLDay every year. At the workshop, whose fourth edition was celebrated this year, students presented the projects developed during the academic year.
