Bilbao hosts the first international edition of 'Hack & Disrupt!', the first technological event focused on sustainable finance and insurance

Bilbao will host for three days the first international edition of the event "Hack & Disrupt!", the first technology event focused on investment, sustainable finance and insurance, which aims to respond to the technological challenges of these sectors. To this end, participants will respond to the current needs of these areas in a hackathon event that will serve to identify the needs of these sectors and develop solutions that can be implemented immediately.
The hackathon will bring together companies, entrepreneurs and startups to solve global technological challenges as a team for two days. The meeting is organized by Bolsas Mercados Españoles, BME and BBF Fintech, the incubator of Mondragon University dedicated to the application of new technologies to finance, BBF Fintech, integrated in the Bilbao Berrikuntza Faktoria campus of Mondragon Unibertsitatea in Bilbao. The sponsors of the event are BBK, Plaza Financiera Bilbao and the SIX startup accelerator, F10.
The event seeks to connect entrepreneurs and companies to reimagine finance and insurance through digitalization. The real challenges that participants will face are geared towards innovation and sustainable finance. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the event will be hybrid, with a face-to-face part, at the BBF Bilbao Berrikuntza Faktoria, where all health protection measures will be followed, and an online part, through a technological platform, which will have different stands, chats and work rooms. The opening and closing ceremonies, as well as different panels related to the entrepreneurial world and the fintech and insurtech ecosystem, will be streamed from the platform.
The program
The event will begin on Friday 25 at 5 pm. Among others, the inauguration will be attended by Lander Beloki, dean of the University of Mondragon; Ainara Basurko, regional deputy for economic promotion; Xabier Ochandiano, councilor for economic development, trade and employment of the Bilbao City Council, and Javier Hernani, CEO of BME, who will reflect on innovation in the securities markets. This will be followed by a round table on sustainability.
The challenges will be presented at 6 p.m. on Friday and the teams will start working on their resolution at 6:30 p.m. They will have until Sunday 27th at 11 am. On that day, at 6 p.m., the winners will be announced. Saturday 26th features presentations by several experts, including Berta Ares, CEO of BME Inntech, and Manuel Ardanza, president of the Bilbao Stock Exchange.
The winners will be eligible for three prizes: a prospecting trip to Switzerland where they can learn in detail about its fintech ecosystem, participate in the II Open Innovation Program of BBF Fintech, the public-private fintech incubator promoted by the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, the City Council of Bilbao, the University of Mondragon and Dominion, as well as direct access to the final interview to participate in the incubation and acceleration program of F10.
Javier Hernani, CEO of BME, believes that BME's presence at this event reaffirms the company's commitment to digitalization, innovation and the promotion of SMEs and disruptive startups, which joins other initiatives, such as the Pre-Market Environment. "Today's startups can be tomorrow's stock market blue chips," he says. "We also reiterate our support for Bilbao as an innovative financial center, where BME closely follows the entrepreneurial ecosystem," he concludes.
