The NO-STRESS MANUFACTURING project, Monitoring human factors at the production line, has been funded by the EIT Manufacturing call.

Summary of the project

Nowadays, over 3ML work accidents occurred, often due to accidental events and human error. Estimates state that 55% of the total costs of production in a company is due to lost earning, of which 17% and 10% is of medical and insurance costs, respectively. Psychologists find the causes of such phenomena in stress and fatigue, at both mental and physical level, due to production tasks and work environments. Even when stress does not lead to accidents, it affects workers' performance causes health problems with overall effects on workers and their social life.

In order to analyse and mitigate this level of stress, No-Stress captures the motion of workers while performing manufacturing tasks, by real time collecting neurophysiological parameters and interacting voice assistance to gather reactions and feedbacks. In No-Stress, physical and motion assistance is reached through exoskeletons and already marketed voice assistant systems (TRL9). They will be complemented through the project by non-invasive tools for neurophysiological data collection. The monitoring system, at the end, will include a techno-module that proposes rules to lead the workplace toward a human-centred work environment.

The causes of stress will be identified in order to redesign the work environment with a human-centred approach focused on worker well-being. On the long term, the project would imply enter new markets such as the one of design of manufacturing technologies. Companies (as the end-users in the consortium) will get healthier working contexts, increased workers’ well-being, risen production efficiency and less human errors, absences and/or downtime. Safer workplaces will reduce injury/illness costs by 20-40% and a workload-related absenteeism or human errors by 10% per year. Employers on their side could save 4-6€ per € spent on safety. Moreover, companies will be able, over time, to link their saffety procedures, risk or efficiency assessments to the factors that affect workers' load and performances. The project results could represent a start point for the design of future norms/regulations for working environments (beyond the current ISO_9886).

The project will be carried out by 4 technology providers (WearHealth, SPIX industry, Mondragon University, Grenoble-INP), 3 methodological providers (INEGI,POLITO, BIBA), 2 User companies (CTAG; TRAFIL).
