With the aim of influencing society through literature, a group of students in the Bachelor’s degree program in Primary Education of the Faculty of Humanities and Education Sciences of Mondragon University has created the Murmurikan project.

The promoters of the project are Primary Education students Janire Bassecourt, Laida Vázquez and Irati Barona. These three students met last year with the aim of promoting literature among young people in a fun way. Their idea was successful and there are now 21 people in the group. In addition to students, Faculty teachers and staff have also joined the Murmurikan project.

This academic year will be key in stabilizing the project, after collaboration with the Goyeneche Foundation and the extension of the initiative to the children of Aretxabaleta, Arrasate and Bergara as well as to those of Eskoriatza. For this reason, one of the objectives this year will be to work on easy reading and continue to receive training in storytelling.

Murmurikan found its starting point in the social dynamics of Euskaraldia, more specifically, in a talk given by storyteller Dorleta Kortazar on the Eskoriatza campus. After that event, and with the collaboration of different professionals, the group has continued to develop various initiatives: courses, games and literary promotions. One of these activities was a story reading session aimed at primary school students, which took place last year in the library on the Eskoriatza campus.

Murmurikan in the Garagune in Arrasate

Last October, members of Murmurikan visited the Garagune in Arrasate. Garagunes are spaces that are managed by the Goyeneche Foundation of San Sebastian and whose mission is to contribute to improving the quality of life of people with intellectual disabilities. The visit had two objectives: first, to take the steps to organize an activity in conjunction with Garagunea, and second, to promote collaboration with the Garagune Easy Reading Club, thanks to the mediation of the Faculty’s library with Irakurketa Erraza Euskadi, and to publicize the experience of the Garagune Easy Reading Club in the Faculty.
