Last Friday, July 3, Monika Sara Tkacz defended her doctoral thesis at the Aula Magna of the Oñati Campus. The dissertation, entitled “Unfolding How Entrepreneurial Teams Create: An Integrative Model of Entrepreneurial Creativity of Teams from Mondragon Team Academy in the Basque Country”, examines the complex functioning of entrepreneurial teams and the factors that foster or constrain their creative potential during the early stages of entrepreneurship
The research was supervised by Dr. Aitor Lizartza Martin and Dr. Izaskun Agirre Aramburu, both professors and researchers at the Faculty of Business Studies of Mondragon Unibertsitatea. The examination committee was composed of Dr. Ana Fernández Laviada (University of Cantabria), Dr. José Luis González Pernía (University of Deusto) and Dr. María Sáiz Santos (University of the Basque Country).
The thesis explores how entrepreneurial teams engage in collective creative processes to identify market opportunities and generate novel and useful business ideas. Through three interconnected studies, the research provides a comprehensive understanding of entrepreneurial team creativity by analysing team members' characteristics, team climate, creative processes and resulting outcomes.
The empirical study was conducted with 88 entrepreneurial teams from Mondragon Team Academy (MTA), a pioneering entrepreneurship ecosystem embedded within Mondragon Unibertsitatea and an international benchmark in team entrepreneurship. The findings reveal that entrepreneurial creativity is a complex and fragile phenomenon shaped by shared entrepreneurial predispositions, interpersonal dynamics and the contextual conditions in which collective work takes place.
Among its main contributions, the thesis develops an integrative diagnostic and intervention framework aimed at improving the management of creativity in entrepreneurial teams. It also provides recommendations for entrepreneurship education, incubation and acceleration programmes, and public policies supporting entrepreneurship.
The thesis defence, held at 11:00 a.m., represents another milestone in the research activity of the Faculty of Business Studies of Mondragon Unibertsitatea, further reinforcing its commitment to generating applied knowledge in strategic areas such as entrepreneurship, innovation and teamwork.
