Opening of the 2026-2027 academic year at Mondragon Unibertsitatea
Mondragon Unibertsitatea kicks off the academic year with a focus on excellence, having increased technology transfer to businesses by 45% and achieved an employment rate of 92%.
Mondragon Unibertsitatea today held the official opening ceremony for its 2026/2027 academic year in the new Goe building, the Gastronomy Open Ecosystem.
The course was officially opened by the Regional Minister for Science, Universities and Innovation, Juan Ignacio Pérez Iglesias, and was attended by the Rector of Mondragon Unibertsitatea, Vicente Atxa; the Secretary-General of Mondragon Unibertsitatea, Idoia Peñacoba; and Dr Cipriano Carrero and Professor Eneko Izcue, respectively, from the Faculty of Gastronomic Sciences at Mondragon Unibertsitatea, who delivered the opening lecture entitled ‘To ferment or be fermented: microorganisms and enzymes in the kitchen’.
Also present were the President of Mondragon Unibertsitatea, Xabier Egibar; the President of the MONDRAGON Corporation, Pello Rodríguez; the President of the Basque Parliament, Bakartxo Tejeria; the mayors of Arrasate and Aretxabaleta, Maider Morrás and Garikoitz Iturbe respectively; and deans and former vice-chancellors of Mondragon Unibertsitatea, amongst other prominent figures and officials from both the political and academic spheres.
Excellence and knowledge transfer
The university is launching the 2026/2027 academic year with excellence at the heart of the institution – a model it has been developing in recent years in the areas of teaching and learning, research, internationalisation and various innovation projects it is leading.
Excellence in research and knowledge transfer is another area that Mondragon Unibertsitatea has been strengthening for years. Over the last four years, scientific publications have increased by 27%, and the university now boasts 11 centres of research excellence in the Basque Country. During this period, technology transfer to businesses has grown by 45%, reaching 22.2 million euros last year.
The University is also continuing to work on strengthening its local and international standing, having achieved – according to the CyD ranking – the top position in student mobility within the Basque Country and second place nationally, as well as leading the European EU4DUAL project aimed at creating the European dual university.
