Mondragon University today held the official opening event for the new academic year 2021/22 at its Faculty of Gastronomic Sciences-Basque Culinary Center.

The Rector’s speech focused on three key areas: how the university has leveraged the Faculty of Gastronomic Sciences-Basque Culinary Center, which is now celebrating its 10 th anniversary; adaptation to the COVID-19 situation and the university’s return to exclusively face-to-face classes; and its future challenges, with projects seeking to generate a social and economic impact.

These new projects include the development of the Bilbao AS Fabrik project, officially opened in January, the start-up of ELAB in Arrasate, where an innovation centre geared to projects for sustainable new industrial activities will be developed, the Basque Culinary Center’s new Gastronomy Open Ecosystem centre (GOE), and the start-up of an Open Digital Entrepreneurship Platform, all of these challenges closely aligned with the strategies and goals of the next-generation programmes.

The Rector was accompanied at the opening ceremony by the President of the Basque Government Iñigo Urkullu, who officially opened the academic year, Mondragon University’s Secretary General Idoia Peñacoba, and the doctoral graduate Usune Etxeberria, who gave the opening speech “Nutrition and health– a scenario for transforming society".

The event was also attended by the Education Councillor Jokin Bildarratz and the President of Mondragon University Mikel Álvarez, together with authorities and guests.
