Last week, four researchers from the DME-Design and Structural Mechanics line of Mondragon Goi Eskola Politeknikoa participated in the MMT Symposium 2026, held from June 21 to 23 in Porto, Portugal. The conference, organized on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the journal Mechanism and Machine Theory, brought together international researchers in the field of mechanism and machine science.

During the symposium, Aurea Iñurritegui, Ibai Ulacia, Pello Alberdi and Mattin Maiztegui presented research papers related to the design, modelling and mechanical behaviour of machine elements. In total there were six works presented during the congress:

  • Carburized induced tooth distortions in geared transmissions: thermo-metallurgical FE prediction and experimental validation (Aurea iñurritegui)
  • Validity of fretting wear maps in aerospace-grade crowned involute spline couplings  (Aurea iñurritegui)
  • On the feasibility of predicting rolling contact fatigue from uniaxial S-N curves  (Ibai Ulacia)
  • DMLab: Design and modelling of machine elements  (Ibai Ulacia)
  • Optimizing ball bearing contact angle for minimum power loss under combined loads  (Pello Alberdi)
  • Accurate real contact area computation of anisotropic rough surfaces  (Mattin Maiztegui)

Through these contributions, the team shared advances related to geared transmissions, bearings, splined couplings, contact fatigue, rough surfaces, and machine element design and modeling tools. Participation in the congress also allowed the exchange of knowledge with international leaders in the area, attendance at sessions of great scientific and technological interest, and the strengthening of the international presence of Mondragon Goi Eskola Politeknikoa in the field of advanced mechanical design.
