The conference was held in the IdeiEnea space on the Aretxabaleta campus of Mondragon University. Nagore Ipiña, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Education Sciences of Mondragon University, was charged with opening the event. She stressed that the book presented at the conference is an indicator of the importance of the subject for the educational community, since it is “the fruit of cooperation between university and school.”

The Minister of Education of the Basque Government, Begoña Pedrosa, then took the floor, pointing out that the conference is an important space for the start of the academic year and presenting it as “an opportunity to overcome school language barriers.” Pedrosa stressed that it is time to carry out an in-depth review of the language immersion model, time to evolve from EUSLE classrooms to EUSLE centers, with the aim of “guaranteeing the general well-being of students.”

University of the Basque Country professor Jasone Cenoz then spoke to the professionals attending the conference. In a lecture entitled 'Opportunities and challenges of the Basque education system,' Cenoz explained that the challenges facing education are many, but that language is the key to the development of all other skills. After detailing the challenges of the Basque education system in terms of language, Cenoz posed a set of questions.

After a break, the general themes of the publication were presented by Eneritz Garro, professor and researcher at the Faculty of Humanities and Education Sciences of Mondragon University and co-author of the book 'Denok gara (gure arloko) hizkuntza irakasle: arloko alfabetzatzea garatzeko oinarriak eta tresnak' (‘We are all language teachers (in our field): foundations and strategies for the development of content area literacy’).

Finally, professionals from various educational centers shared their experiences. Jone Zamarbide Gastesi (Samaniego Integrated Public School), Maite Gómez Lete (Haurtzaro School), Patxi Goñi Lerga (Elgoibar Public School) and Igor Martin de Vidales Navarro (Ibarrekolanda Secondary School) participated in the round table.

The book ‘Denok gara (gure arloko) hizkuntza irakasle: arloko alfabetzatzea garatzeko oinarriak eta tresnak’

This book was produced as part of the ALPHA and ELKARHITZ projects. It is divided into two main parts. The first section explains what content area literacy is and specifies its components. The strata of content area literacy are also characterized: textual genres, cognitive discourse functions and content area vocabulary. The second section presents the methodological bases for the development of disciplinary literacy. The integration and scaffolding of literacy is proposed at three levels: curricular, didactic materials and interaction. This book not only presents concepts and knowledge related to literacy at the international level, but also provides the contributions of the authors as well as various tools that can be used to develop disciplinary literacy that have come about through the ALPHA and ELKARHITZ projects.
