His Final Degree Project, focused on AI-based object segmentation in railway point clouds, has been recognised for its high technical and methodological quality and its practical application to a real business problem
Jon Ortega Uzquiaga, a graduate of Business Data Analytics(BDTA) in Enpresagintza Fakultatea – Faculty of Business Studies at Mondragon University, has received the Ekonomistak 2025 Award for the best Final Degree Project (TFG) at Mondragon University for his project, “Segmentación de Objetos en Nubes de Puntos Ferroviarias con Inteligencia Artificial”.
The award ceremony took place at AS Fabrik in Bilbao, where Cristina Andrés Urarte, representing the Basque Association of Economists – Ekonomistak, presented the award to Jon Ortega. The ceremony was also attended by Lander Beloki Mendizabal, Dean of Enpresagintza Fakultatea, together with representatives from Mondragon University and the professional community.
The jury particularly highlighted the project's high technical and methodological level, especially in the fields of algorithms and data analysis. The project takes a strongly practical approach to addressing a real business problem through the use of Artificial Intelligence techniques.
The proposal also stands out for its potential impact on efficiency, innovation and value creation, as well as for its potential to be transferred to other applications of interest in the economic and business fields.
The jury also placed particular value on the project's innovative nature and its connection with emerging trends such as Data Analytics and advanced data management, areas that are opening up new professional opportunities for future generations of professionals in economics and business.
A project that goes beyond the Final Degree Project
One of the distinctive features of Jon Ortega's work is that its development has continued beyond the completion of the Final Degree Project. The research and prototyping carried out as part of the project have continued through subsequent development, moving towards applications with real-world impact.
Developed together with We Are Clickers, the project demonstrates how academic work can go beyond the university environment and evolve into initiatives with practical applications in the business context.
