Fourth-year engineering students visited the facilities that have been launched in Zerain and Oiartzun

Fourth-year engineering students at Mondragon Unibertsitatea have the opportunity to choose one of the 10 pathways offered by the university, one of which focuses on the Energy Transition. In this context, those who have shown interest in the topic have made two technical visits in recent weeks, during which they were able to observe firsthand how municipalities are addressing the challenges and opportunities of the energy transition. Specifically, they learned about the management of the electrical installations in Oiartzun's municipal buildings and the operation of the Zerain energy community.
In Zerain, they learned about the importance of energy communities and how they can be promoted through citizen participation. The Zerain energy community currently manages two photovoltaic installations located on the roofs of several existing buildings.
In Oiartzun, the students had the opportunity to learn about the monitoring and control systems for the municipality's electrical infrastructure. During the visit, they learned how energy management is carried out, saw how the Oiartzun Town Hall's public lighting system works, as well as that of the municipal buildings, and saw the energy management of the sports facilities and the drinking water network. The students saw how digital technologies and energy efficiency strategies are applied, which helped them understand how they enable resource optimization and cost reduction.
These visits brought energy closer to students through real-life projects promoted by citizens and institutions within the framework of the energy transition. The 4th-year Energy Transition program covers topics related to renewable energy and self-consumption, smart monitoring, the energy market, and thermal energy in buildings.
Many thanks to the Oiartzun Town Hall and the Zerain energy community.
