Today, 5 March, Mondragon Unibertsitatea, together with the Institute for the Future of Education (IFE) at Tecnológico de Monterrey, held a conference in Bilbao, specifically at the Bilbao AS Fabrik campus, to discuss the future of universities. The conference analysed the challenges and opportunities facing universities and explored innovative models from around the world, with the participation of education experts. All this took place in a context clearly marked by the increase in new technologies in learning and the boom in skills in the workplace.

The keynote lecture “The Future of Universities and the Skill Ecosystem” was given by Paulo Blikstein, director of the Research Laboratory at the Institute for the Future of Education at Tecnológico de Monterrey, Mexico, and affiliate professor at Columbia University's Institute for Data Science. The expert specialises in research on how new technologies can change the learning of science, computing and engineering.

Following this lecture, a round table discussion was held on “The future of universities” as flexible and permanent learning spaces. The participants in this round table discussion were Sara Urionabarrenetxea, Director of University Planning and Organisation for the Basque Government; Zigor Ezpeleta, Director of Social Management at MONDRAGON Corporation; the Rector of Mondragon Unibertsitatea, Vicente Atxa; and Antonio Mela, Associate Professor of Economics and Education at the London School of Economics, where he is working on transforming education through the strategic integration of artificial intelligence.

Following this round table discussion, a new debate began on “The Future of the Skill Ecosystem”, featuring experts Jon Altuna, Vice-Chancellor of Mondragon Unibertsitatea; Peru Valdes, General Advisor to the Department of Economic Promotion of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia; Elías Unzueta, Director of Engineering at Petronor; and Rolando Fuentes.
