This recognition consolidates FOOTPLASTIC as a strategic solution for organizations to advance toward more sustainable and circular business models. Following a jury verdict that highlighted the high level of the candidates, the project will be presented via video on March 16th at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao.

A Calculation Model with Scientific Rigor

Unlike other indicators that focus solely on greenhouse gas emissions, FOOTPLASTIC allows for a specific and quantifiable evaluation of the impact associated with the use, transformation, and end-of-life of plastic materials throughout the entire value chain.
The MIK Research Centre, affiliated with the Faculty of Business Studies at Mondragon Unibertsitatea, has been responsible for designing the tool's methodology. The system is based on three pillars of action:
  • MEASURE: It uses the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology under the European Commission's Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) approach.
  • SIMULATE: It translates scientific complexity into clear and actionable results through an agile and intuitive system.
  • ACT: It identifies critical impact points to make informed decisions in eco-design and manufacturing without the need for large investments in external consultancy.
This project has been funded by the Basque Government's HAZITEK program, with co-financing from the European Union through the 2021-2027 FEDER funds.

Heading to the Guggenheim Gala

Ranking among the top 10 finalists of the 2026 Sustainability Awards reinforces FOOTPLASTIC's position as an essential tool for visualizing the environmental weight of plastic beyond CO2. On March 16th, the community will have the chance to learn more about this solution that identifies real opportunities for recycling and reintroducing materials into the circular economy.

Congratulations to the entire research team and the consortium companies for this great milestone!
