On January 26, this year’s Euspot competition was presented in Vitoria in the building of the Higher Council of Cooperatives of the Basque Country. Belen Balerdi, general secretary of the Higher Council of Cooperatives of the Basque Country; Arantzazu Lagunilla, director of Arteman Komunikazioa; Unai Elkoro, mayor of Aretxabaleta; Rober Gutiérrez, director of Bai Euskarari Elkartea; Naiara Okina, head of communication at Arizmendi Ikastola; and Xabi Igoa, coordinator of the Digital Communication track in the Audiovisual Communication degree program at Mondragon University all took part in the presentation.

The Euspot competition was founded in 2001 to promote the creation of ads in Basque. A pioneering event in the Basque Country, it is a benchmark in the field of creation and advertising in Basque. This year marks the 11th anniversary of the competition and its theme is: Why work in a cooperative? The primary sponsor of the competition this year is the Higher Council of Cooperatives of the Basque Country. The main organization of cooperatives in the Basque Country aims, through Euspot, to make an effort to spread cooperativism and the values of the cooperative model among young people.

A very productive evolution: 500 ads from all over the Basque Country

Euspot is a well-known competition that has received about 500 ads per year to date. There is no doubt that the influence of the audiovisual is enormous in all areas today and that, consequently, the audiovisual format inspires enormous interest, especially among young people. However, Euspot is not a competition aimed exclusively at young people; people of many different ages and profiles have participated over the years. It is also important to remember that imagination and creativity are the main ingredients of Euspot. Therefore, the contest is open to all and there are prizes aimed at all ages and levels. The 2021 competition was exceptional because the lockdown and the state of emergency undoubtedly directly affected the course of the event. However, despite the special situation, a large number of ads were received. Once again, it is expected that the contest will reach the whole Basque Country, again breaking all records, and in this achievement, the organization will be accompanied by the Higher Council of Cooperatives of the Basque Country. Thus, hand in hand with the main association linked to cooperatives, the organizers will provide specific instruction about Euspot to numerous educational centers, both in person and online.

This year’s theme: Why work in a cooperative?

This year’s ads should encourage young people to take an interest in cooperativism and should aim to value cooperativism. What differentiates a cooperative from a non-cooperative company? Why do you want to create a cooperative or work in one? What does a cooperative project have to offer compared to other models? There can be many reasons and many replies. What do cooperativism and being cooperative mean to you? Create a 30-second ad to show the value of cooperative people, especially young people, and cooperativism. There can be many reasons for working in a cooperative: because cooperative workers earn a decent salary, because the distribution of wealth is based on balance, because they are projects created by the people and well rooted in the people. Because they are more sustainable, generate quality employment, promote parity between men and women and are highly innovative. Cooperatives offer us the opportunity to participate in company decisions and that also makes them attractive.

This year, the primary sponsor of Euspot will be the Higher Council of Cooperatives of the Basque Country, which is a public entity that advises Basque administrations on all issues related to cooperativism. It also offers help to improve the legal and institutional system of the socio-economic order of the BAC. It intervenes in disputes that arise in Basque cooperatives through procedures of arbitration, mediation or conciliation. Today it is the main organization of cooperatives in the Basque Country.

Submitted works may have a maximum duration of 30 seconds and, following last year’s change, the format will be free again. You may record vertically or horizontally.

Online training in creativity

Again this year, the organization will offer online training on audiovisual advertising with the aim of strengthening the pool of ad creators.
