Registration: Lecture: ‘The Second Renaissance: the rekindled fire of the ice age

Organized by the Master’s program in Dynamization of Basque Culture, a lecture entitled ‘The Second Renaissance: the rekindled fire of the ice age’ will be given by Antxoka Agirre on the Aretxabaleta campus of the Faculty of Humanities and Education Sciences. According to the organizers, “The Second Basque Renaissance was our culture’s response to the challenges posed by Late Modernity. For this, a new generation of cultural agents had to demonstrate the courage to escape from their winter camps in the cultural ice age brought about by Francoism as well as the ability to untangle the knots tied by the imagery and antimodern discourse imposed by the First Renaissance. In its final years, they brought the pulse of New Social Movements to cultural creation.” In the lecture, “both the challenges and the responses will be examined in detail” in an attempt to reach a deeper understanding of the path that has led us to the current situation.

University of the Basque Country professor Antxoka Agirre wrote his dissertation on ‘A history of bertsolaritza: mediation, activism and the project (1823-2018): a testimony to the life force of the subaltern voice.’ He started by gathering and analyzing information on the presence of bertsolaritza in the historical press, on the radio, in film, on television and on the internet, and linked it to the contributions of people active in bertsolaritza. Agirre also carried out a broad analysis of the historical context, placing it in the context of the evolution of popular culture in Europe. In his lecture, he will delve into the Second Basque Renaissance, which began in the 1960s.

Master’s degree program in Dynamization of Basque Culture

The lecture was organized by the Master’s degree program in Dynamization of Basque Culture. In recent years, the need to place the Basque cultural dimension at the center of processes and activities aimed at revitalizing the language has grown significantly; a cultural foundation is essential in these processes. The aim of the Master’s program is therefore to train professionals so that they can work in formal or non-formal education, local cultural management, or municipal or public institutions. In 2007, the Faculty of Humanities and Education Sciences of Mondragon University launched its Expert Diploma in Transmission of Basque Culture, and the Master’s degree program in Dynamization of Basque Culture was later created to broaden the opportunities offered by the Expert Diploma programs.
