COLLABORATION

Students of the mechatronics engineering degree at the Bilbao As Fabrik campus develop a machine for the manufacture of springs in the laboratories of the Somorrostro centre.

In June 2019, the Higher Polytechnic School of Mondragon Unibertsitatea and the Somorrostro Centre signed an agreement for the collaborative teaching of the Degree in Mechatronics Engineering in Bizkaia. This agreement allows students to use the facilities of both entities during the 4 years of the degree course.

The project being developed by students in the 2nd year of the Degree in Mechatronics Engineering at the Bilbao As Fabrik campus of Mondragon Unibertsitatea is based on designing, manufacturing and starting up a spring manufacturing machine. It is a year-long project that has been divided into two phases:

  • First semester: mechanical and electrical parts design
  • Second semester: manufacturing and commissioning

This is a complex project that brings together the design and manufacture of parts, welding, selection of commercial elements, design of the electrical panel, control, integration with automatons, analysis of CE marking and safety, among others. To develop the technical part of the project, the students of Mondragon Unibertsitatea have made use of the facilities of the Somorrostro Centre.

Mondragon Unibertsitatea's engineering courses are taught following a very practical and innovative methodology based on multidisciplinary projects. These are complex projects where students have to put into practice the knowledge acquired in various subjects and for this it is necessary to have workshops and laboratories equipped with technological equipment.

High employability rate

The collaboration between Mondragon Unibertsitatea and the Somorrostro Centre for the teaching of the Degree in Mechatronics Engineering in Bizkaia began in the 2020/21 academic year. This degree is designed so that both students coming directly from the baccalaureate and students coming from Vocational Training can continue their education at university level, studying an engineering speciality with a high level of employability in a practical and innovative way.

According to the report published in mid-May by U-Ranking (carried out by BBVA and Ivie), Mondragon Unibertsitatea's engineering degrees have the highest employability rate in the Basque Country and the 5th highest in Spain.
