Students in the degree program in Eco-technology in Industrial Processes Engineering (Green Manufacturing), which is housed on the Galarreta campus, have reached the finals in the ‘Teaching Factories’ competition, a European contest on industry and green manufacturing sponsored by the European consortium EIT Manufacturing. The objectives of the competition are to bring to the fore the benefits of collaboration between universities and companies in the context of innovation in manufacturing and to solve industrial challenges in the area of sustainability. The EIT Manufacturing network is composed of industrial, educational and research organizations that work collaboratively on industrial innovation and sustainability.

Teams from a number of different European countries have participated in the contest and a total of six teams have reached the finals. The finals will be held on November 16 and the Mondragon University students will compete against teams from universities in Croatia, Greece, Macedonia, Hungary and Italy.

The team from Mondragon University is made up of 5 students who developed their project when they were in their third year of study in the degree program in Eco-technology in Industrial Processes Engineering (Green Manufacturing). The teams all had three months to solve one of the six challenges related to the concept of ‘green industry’ proposed by the participating companies.

Specifically, the challenge that the Mondragon University students worked on was the one proposed by the Procter & Gamble company, which is a multinational company that manufactures consumer goods. The 65 brands it sells include Ariel, Gillette, Oral-B, etc. The company employs 99,000 people and aims to increase its environmental responsibility in the supply chain of its products. The challenge to the students is based on monitoring data on the consumption and use of resources (water, electricity, gas, compressed air, etc.) in order to carry out a specific analysis and propose corrective actions to reduce the resource consumption of a production chain.

Degree program in Eco-technology in Industrial Processes Engineering (Green Manufacturing): a commitment to industry

Industry has a huge impact on the environment and companies must be committed to ecological transition. Thus, this degree program, which is taught on the Galarreta campus, trains young talent in manufacturing technologies and materials from a sustainable perspective. The objective is for the new technicians who join industrial companies to have internalized the vision of sustainability and to know how to apply green methods and techniques that are in line with European directives.

According to Lanbide’s latest employability report (corresponding to data from 2018 graduates), the employment rate of this Engineering program is 100%, 90% of whom work in the Basque Country (which testifies to the importance that Basque organizations have given for years to the challenges of sustainability and efficiency).
