The Communication Camp is happening this summer for the third time. Tell us about it.

The two previous summers, we held the Camp and had very positive results both times. All the young people said that it was a very dynamic, participatory and fun camp and that they had a great time.

Who is it for?

The camp is for young people in their 4th year of Compulsory Secondary Education or their 1st year of High School. Young people 15 to 17 years old.

What will they do at Communication Camp?

The young people will have the opportunity to work on skills that may be necessary to be communicators. They’ll learn some key aspects about how to behave in front of the camera, they’ll record and edit images on cell phones, work on photojournalism, record podcasts... This year, we’ll focus specifically on video podcasts. And everything will be fun, because we mustn’t forget that it’s a summer camp and the young people come to have a good time.

What communication experts will be there this year?

We’ll have Gaztea announcer Ainhoa Vitoria and Goiena journalist Xabier Urzelai, and myself. Also, teachers from Mondragon University and professionals from Goiena will be supervisors and coordinators.

The camp will take place the first week of July.

That’s right. July 3 to July 7, Monday to Friday mornings from 9:00 to 1:30. During the breaks, lunch will be available on the Aretxabaleta campus. The groups will be limited to 15 participants. We’ll also visit the headquarters of the Goiena Communication Group in Arrasate. We’ll learn about the newsroom, the set for tv programs, and the Arrasate Irratia radio station; the students will meet the multimedia professionals at Goiena…

How can people register?

We’ve created a website with all the information and the registration form. If people have questions or need more information, the can reach us by calling or texting us at 600 02 27 20 (WhatsApp and Telegram) or emailing us at komunikaziocampusa@mondragon.edu

How long is registration open?

Until June 19, and the camp costs 125 euros.

The camp is open to the whole Basque Country...

Mondragon University’s audiovisual communication campus in Aretxabaleta is a leader in communication in the Basque Country; likewise, the Goiena Communication Group is the most important group of Basque regional media. We believe that this camp should appeal to any young person in the Basque Country.

There are not many summer camps about communication…

There’s one in Catalonia, run by the newspaper Ara, a camp about journalism. But at our camp, we provide the opportunity to become familiar with the general profiles of a communicator: journalist, television announcer, radio announcer... The participants will record videos, do photography, make podcasts, create digital content...

Where did you get the idea to have a Communication Camp?

It occurred to us that Mondragon University and the Goiena Communication Group, two of the best known entities of the Alto Deba area, entities that have worked together on different projects and that work in communication, had the opportunity to hold specialized summer camps for young people. We are experts in communication and we have experience in education and in the media. We also have the physical space and the materials – on the audiovisual campus in Aretxabaleta and at the Goiena facilities in Arrasate – that can be adapted to the needs of this type of activity, as well as professionals and appropriate support to make it happen.
