On October 4, classes began in the new Master’s Degree Program in Promotion of Basque Culture offered by the Faculty of Humanities and Education Sciences of Mondragon University. A total of 20 participants were present for the first class of this first year of this Master’s program; the class took place on the Eskoriatza campus.

Training cultural agents

Throughout the academic year, the Master’s program will train the pool of agents responsible for the promotion of Basque culture, professionals who will have an impact on formal and informal education, in municipal cultural areas and in other public institutions.

Issues in Basque culture

By working in depth on the various topics of the Master’s program and using active methodologies, the training program will address the issues and problems of Basque culture: ways of metabolizing global cultural impact, ways of combining transmission and openness, interpretive syntheses of our roots, foundations for understanding the position the language should hold, the influence of technology, conditions for community regeneration, challenges in artistic areas, etc.

In their work, the 20 participants in the Master’s program will go beyond what has been accomplished to date in the area of cultural activity. Thus, they will delve into aspects such as the organization of the effective transmission of cultural activity in both formal and informal education, the reconstruction of the network of municipal agents in the area of culture, the bases from which local public policy on Basque cultural activity is improved, communication tasks, and possible lines of research.

Among other organizations, the Basque Summer University and the Center for Basque Studies of the University of Nevada at Reno will take part in this Master’s program.
