On December 2, the Faculty of Humanities and Education Sciences of Mondragon University will host a conference entitled The Basque language and interculturality in the educational communities of Basque-speaking municipalities. The Zaldibia experience (in the original Basque: Euskara eta kulturartekotasuna udalerri euskaldunetako

hezkuntza-komunitateetan). The conference will be held on the Eskoriatza campus, in room D.0.3, and will be open to the public, however, interested parties should register in advance.

  • Registration: The Basque language and interculturality in the educational communities of Basque-speaking municipalities.

The conference will address how to continue living in Basque in schools while at the same time providing information to and facilitating participation for immigrant parents who do not know Basque. Building a bridge between the Basque language and interculturality is a huge challenge today for Basque-speaking municipalities and their schools, though not only for them. The conference will focus especially on the educational community of Zaldibia, where a project was launched during the 2021-2022 academic year to respond to the aforementioned challenge through specific actions, with the involvement of the entire municipality. The leaders in that process will participate in the conference.

Zaldibia’s initiative has spread to five more Basque towns, and its impact is also reaching other places. Educational communities, municipal agents, the Commonwealth of Basque Municipalities (Udalerri Euskaldunen Mankomunitatea, UEMA) and the Faculty of Humanities and Education Sciences of Mondragon University (HUHEZI) will continue to collaborate in these efforts.
