Background

The electricity grid is rapidly evolving to accommodate various new energy assets, and energy storage is one of the key enabling technologies in this transition. Solar, wind, decentralised grids, different ways of storing energy, increasing electricity demand and new Electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructures are all unfolding, leading to new challenges to keep the grid reliable and stable. Ultimately, there is a need for new power electronics and, above all, a reliable, modular, and universal interface solution that seamlessly integrates with all system components and the electricity grid.

Objectives

  • Developing an interoperable and modular Hybrid Energy Storage System (HESS)
  • Demonstrating various use cases and seamlessly interfacing the grid to provide multiple services, such as a combination of load levelling, frequency regulation, provision of backup power, at minimum cost.

The HESS consists of 1st and 2nd life batteries, modular power electronics and thermal management and an intelligent control structure. Managing this is a complex and challenging task since it involved combining components of different natures (e.g. electrical, mechanical, thermal or chemical) and of different dynamics into a single system.

Role of the Faculty of Engineering of Mondragon Unibertsitatea

The group of Electrical Energy brings into the project critical expertise related to ac and dc power system control and design, energy storage sizing and integration in stationary applications, and power converter control and design. In particular, this group will lead Result 4 to develop a universal and self-healing energy management strategy for the iSTORMY hybrid ESS solution and will also participate in other WPs to contribute in the development of the ESS and the electronic power converters and their implementation in the EDF Concept Grid platform.

The Circular Economy and Industrial Sustainability group, on the other hand, will carry out the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) in Result 5 to determine the environmental impact of the iSTORMY solution over its life cycle.
