UNE-ISO 690 Standard

GUIDELINES FOR PRODUCING CITATIONS AND BIBLIOGRAPHICAL REFERENCES IN COMPLIANCE WITH THE UNE-ISO 690 STANDARD

The UNE-ISO 690:2013 standard is identical to the international ISO 690:2010 standard.

These guidelines establish the elements that a bibliographical reference must always contain, in addition to their order and their sequence of presentation.

However, the guidelines regarding punctuation and typographical style are not obligatory. The Library will present some guidelines based on the most widely-used style.

General guidelines

  • Bibliographical references are usually outlined in the following order:

1. Author 2. Title 3. Format (if necessary) 4. Edition 5. Information about publication (city and publisher) 6. Date 7. Numbering of the resource 8. Availability, access or location 9. Additional information

  • When there is more than one author or creator

a) When there are up to three people, all of their names are listed:

ORTEA VARELA, Enrique

MERIAM, James L., L. G. KRAIGE

b) When there are more than three people, the name of the primary author is given followed by “and others” or “et al.”:

BEER, Ferdinand P. and others

  • When the author is unknown, or there is no single person that can be considered to be the creator of the work, the main element in the reference should be the title of the work:

Encyclopaedia Britannica.

Lazarillo de Tormes. Madrid: El Pais, 2005

  • In order to make it easier to identify the material, the title of the work may be followed by the name of the editor, translator or any other person that has contributed to its production, indicating the role of that personn:

Macbeth [película]. Directed by Orson Welles.

SHAMES, Irving H. Mecánica de fluidos. Translated by Juan G. Saldarriaga

  • If the author is an organisation rather than one or more individuals, the name of the organisation should be given. If it is sufficiently clear, the name can be given as it appears in the source; if the name could be ambiguous or misleading then you should add any information that could help to distinguish the organisation:

ASOCIACIÓN ESPAÑOLA DE NORMALIZACIÓN Y CERTIFICACIÓN.

EUSKADI. Lehendakaritza

BIBLIOTECA NACIONAL. Madrid

  • If there is no obvious title to the resource being referenced, you may create a fictitious title, placed between square brackets, which provides information about the subject area, the type of resource, the description of the material and so on:

[Reserva de la fauna en Trinidad]

  • When the type of material being referenced involves two titles – the title of a contribution and the title of the source material – you must place these two titles in different typefaces:

CORNEJO VEGA, F.J. Estampación. In: ARENILLAS TORREJÓN, J.A. (coord.). Manual de documentación del Patrimonio Mueble

GARCÉS, Marina. Filosofía: la palabra libre. In: El País [en línea]

In: Reis: Revista Española de Investigaciones Sociológicas.

  • When referencing a conference that is held regularly under the same name, it is helpful to add the date and place of the conference to provide greater clarity:

Congreso Nacional de Ingeniería Mecánica, Castellón 14-16 noviembre de 2012.

  • In some cases, it is helpful to add the format of the resource referenced in square brackets.

[DVD], [photograph], [film]

  • When using electronic resources, you must include the format in the reference:

[online]

  • If the material being referenced comes from a subsequent edition, it is helpful to specify the edition:

3rd edition revised and expanded

2nd ed.

  • When referencing resources that may later be updated, in addition to including the date of the resource’s creation it is helpful to specify the version of the resource used:

Versión 4.0

Updated 19 August 2016.

  • If the city of publication is not specified, place a probable location between square brackets or use the abbreviation [s. l.] (sine loco):

[s. l.]: Bruño, 1949

  • If the name of the publisher is not stated in the resource referenced, place a probable publisher between square brackets or use the abbreviation [s.n.] (sine nomine)

[s.l.]: [s.n.], 1912

  • You must indicate the date of publication, creation, distribution, etc. It is normally acceptable to include the year of publication only, but when referencing resources that require a more precise date, you can indicate this in various ways:

1959 10 February 2016 2001-03-14

  • If the date does not appear in the material referenced, but it can be surmised, you may give an approximate date:

[ca. 1812] [s. XIX] [200?]

  • When referencing electronic resources, it is best to provide the date on which you accessed the resource in addition to the date of its creation or, when there is no reliable date provided in the source:

[accessed 17 April 2017]

  • When referencing online resources, you must provide information about their availability and access:

Available athttp://www.mondragon.edu/biblioteka

Available at MedlinePlus

  • When referencing online resources, you are not required to state the place of publication or the publisher. You need only provide these when they are clearly highlighted in the resource.

Producing citations

UNE-ISO 690 standard allows for several different in-text citation methods. The most common methods are:

1. Name and date system

At the side of the text or the resource that you wish to cite, add the surname of the author of the material or the name of the organisation in charge, followed by the resource's publication date.

(Garcés, 2016) (Aenor, 2002) (Warminski and others, 2012, p. 159)

2. Numerical system

At the side of the text that you wish to cite, insert a number (normally a superscript number or a number between square or round brackets):

Actuó como intermediario entre árabes y judíos en busca de un acuerdo de paz2

In both cases, the material cited must be included and referenced comprehensively in your bibliography or your list of bibliographical references.

Producing a bibliography

Bibliographical references to sources cited in a text are listed in alphabetical order by the surname of the primary author or by the first word of the name of the organisation if the author is an institution.

When:

  • An author or organisation has several different works to be referenced, these are listed in the order in which they appear, starting with the oldest:
  • An author or organisation has several different works to be referenced and these have been published in the same year, these are listed in alphabetical order by the first world of the title:

Iriarte, Ana.

Historia Antigua. 2007, (25), pp. 35-44
