Zotero has been updated with new features and improvements

Zotero, the reference management tool, has released new versions: Zotero 8 and 9. These updates introduce several changes and new features.

Between January and April 2026, Zotero was updated and released versions 8 and 9, which introduced several improvements.

The changes in the new version do not affect the guide ‘How to manage your bibliography with Zotero’, as the previous features remain unchanged; however, the following new features and improvements have been added, as detailed below:

  • In Zotero version 8, a key feature is the new unified citation dialogue, which simplifies the insertion and editing of citations in Word and LibreOffice, and the integration of annotations as visible and searchable items within the library, making them easier to reuse in notes and papers.
  • Zotero 9 builds on this approach by introducing enhancements to the reading experience and productivity. The new Read Aloud feature allows you to listen to PDF, EPUB, and web page documents using natural-sounding voices, save your reading position, and automatically annotate passages. In addition, the “Recently Read” collection helps you track your reading progress, and you can now insert annotations directly into text documents as active citations.
  • In addition to these new features, there are improvements to collaborative work (with identification of who adds or modifies references in group libraries), better performance, and a new browser-based login, compatible with password managers and ready for two-factor authentication.

Together, Zotero 8 and 9 create a more integrated and accessible ecosystem for reading, annotating, writing, and citing, tailored to the current needs of students, staff, and researchers. You can find more details about all these new features in the new ‘What’s New’ tab in the

The Library recommends that you update your version and install Zotero 9. Also, remember to update any add-ons you use, such as Zotero Connector.
