Facilities

The Masters degree in energy and power electronics is offered in the Campus of EPS Mondrgon. Its facilities are located in the Garaia Innovation Centre where the teaching staff are based: Science, Technology and Innovation. In other words, Universities, Technological Centres and Companies.

The Campus of Mondragon is located in the centre of the Basque country 40 km from Vitoria-Gasteiz and 70 km from Donostia-San Sebastian and Bilbao.

See Mondragon University in the larger map

The Campus has leading-edge facilities with scientific and technological equipment of a high standard and study areas in keeping with the educational model. Besides classrooms for lectures and specialized laboratories, students have appropriate rooms for team-working, meetings and project development.

Laboratories and Experimental Spaces

Students of the Masters degree in energy and power electronics develop their professional skills in the Educational Centre of the following laboratories, workshops and experimental spaces, which include the equipment listed below:

PBL LABORATORY (10110)

 Equipment:

  • Tables, chairs, projector and blackboard.
  • Three-phase power outlet.
  • Equipped with power supplies, oscilloscopes and various material for the PBL stage.
  • Mainly used to develop second semester PBL and rotational practicals.

Used for: PBL and rotational practicals.

Wind Tunnel Laboratory

 Equipment:

  • A wind tunnel is available for the experimental characterisation of wind turbines on a small scale.
  • The wind tunnel allows an approximate programmable wind speed of between 0 and 100 km/h, over a circular surface area of 1.5 m in diameter. For this purpose an integrated  30kW variable frequency drive is used.
  • Wind turbines with different topologies.
  • Electronic converters for power conversion.
  • dSPACE platforms for wind turbine control.

Used by: fist year students in the second semester of PBL.

Electric Vehicle Laboratory

 Equipment:

  • A car winch.
  • Two reconfigurable Reva electric vehicles, suitable as validation platforms for new electrical developments.
  • Reconfigurable Ford hybrid vehicle, suitable as a validation platform for new electrical developments.
  • Two National Instruments PXI data acquisition systems.

Used by: TFM students and first year, second semester PBL students (the experimental platform is under development).

Low Voltage Laboratory

Equipment:

  • Multilevel converter experimental platforms: 3, 4 and 5 levels.
  • Engine test bench experimental platforms: Dual fed machines with stator and rotor, linear machines, synchronous and asynchronous machines with different powers, voltages and mechanical characteristics.
  • Measurement and monitoring equipment: thermographic camera, power supplies, isolators, power amplifiers, etc.

Used by: sometimes by first year students in first semester PBL and, above all, by TFM students.

Energy Storage Laboratory

 Equipment:

  • Programmable DC Power supply (2.4kW).
  • Programmable DC load (2.6kW).
  • Battery testing system.
  • 1kW AC/DC converter.
  • Galvanic isolation meter.
  • Test ovens.

Used by: TFM students.

Magnetic Elements Characterisation Laboratory

 Equipment:

  • The characterisation of hard materials (permanent magnets). MagnetPhysics Permagraph.
  • The characterisation of soft materials  (magnetic plates and other magnetic conductors). MagnetPhysics Hysterisgraph.
  • A hard material M-Pulse Magnetizer 2k4sd (Energy=4000Ws, max. Current 30kA).

Used by: TFM students.

Medium Voltage Laboratory

Equipment:

  • 2 input transformers: 30kV/2x690V, 50Hz, 2MVA.
  • Voltage configuration box:
    • AC voltages: From 400V AC to 4780V AC 4MVA
    • DC voltages (with diode rectifiers): From 565V DC to 6452V DC. 4MVA
  • Seismic mass to isolate high voltage electrical machine vibrations.

Used by: TFM students.

Energy Laboratory

Equipment:

  • Tables, chairs, projector and blackboard.
  • Three-phase power outlet.
  • Equipped with power supplies, oscilloscopes and various material for the PBL stage.
  • Future installation of DC micro grid connected to photovoltaic panels installed on the roof of the building with batteries in the garage.

Used by: PBL development.

Library and Access to Documentary Sources

The library is a 1650 square metre resource centre for learning and research, equipped with wifi, with the following facilities: 294 work desks, 8 work rooms and 1 computer room.

62 computer terminals which allow access, appropriate to the user profile, to all computer applications necessary for the development of training. Also contains printers, CD readers, DVD readers, scanner, etc..

Opening hours are normally from 07:45 to 24:00, except during exam periods, when it remains open until 02:00, reflecting the needs of students.

In order to fulfil its required tasks, the library offers, among others, the following information resources:

  • Access to the joint catalogue of the libraries of Mondragon University, and links from these to other catalogues.
  • Access to the more relevant information in the world of engineering through the Engineering Village portal, which gives access to Compendex and Inspect, Portal ISI Web of Knowledge, CSIS databases and others.
  • Access to electronic journals.
  • Access to electronic news alerts services; also to electronic news alert services of other collaborating universities (Dialnet), and major sources of electronic abstracts (Ingenta …).
  • Access to Refwoks (an application for the management of bibliographical references).

Highlights of the services provided are:

  • Specialised bibliographic information.
  • Interlibrary loans.
  • Loan of communications cards for access to wireless networks; laptop computers; video cameras; reproduction equipment, image-processing equipment.
  • Training courses for students, teachers and researchers in the use of the library and the information resources that it offers.

Other Facilities Available to Students

Included in this section are a number of common spaces that, without being directly linked with the academic training of pupils or any teaching in particular, contribute to their integration in the university campus and to their personal development, such as:

  • The Pedro Viteri and Arana Hall of Residence, with a capacity of 280 students. Offers students accommodation and additional training
  • Common rooms, coffee and canteen for all staff (students, teaching and research personnel, and administration and services personnel who require these services).

Sports facilities integrated within the university campus.
