Faculty of Humanities and Education Sciences professor and researcher Monika Madinabeitia has published an illustrated book entitled Petra, My Basque Grandmother together with professors and illustrators Maitane Puebla and Yera Sanchez.

The book recounts the experiences of Petra Amorote Egaña, who was born in Markina-Xemein. Petra emigrated to the United States in 1909. Like many others, she had to pass the entry tests at Ellis Island; she appears in the register as Petra Mendive, using the family name of the husband she had yet to meet.

The book is based on Petra’s biography, but is an homage to all invisible migrant women, past and present.

The 69-page book was published by the Center for Basque Studies Press of the University of Nevada at Reno and is available online.
