The Faculty of Humanities and Education Sciences has launched a pilot project in some schools in Gipuzkoa to explore through different proposals for experimentation the pedagogical possibilities (creativity, knowledge of the physical environment, play, relationships, cooperation, etc.) that disposable materials from companies may provide in the educational stages of Early Childhood Education and Primary Education.

Education attaches more and more importance to experimentation, creativity and play as tools to promote learning processes among students. The materials used in these processes of experimentation can be diverse. In fact, the more undefined or unstructured the materials are, the more possibilities they offer the student to have more varied and enriching experiences. That is precisely the aim of the pilot experience that the Faculty of Humanity and Education Sciences of Mondragon University has launched in Basque schools to analyze the use of surplus materials from companies as an educational tool that promotes creativity. The companies that have participated and provided materials are Kiro Grifols, Fagor Elektronics, Irizar, Ternua and Orbea.

To determine the effects of experimentation, the University has launched a pilot project this year called Biziberritu, in which eight schools in Gipuzkoa have participated and whose results will be presented at a conference that the Faculty of Humanities and Education Sciences will hold on Monday, June 20. A total of 150 children between the ages of 1 and 12 actively participated in the project. At the conference, the experience of the participating schools will be presented and it will be possible to reflect on experimentation and the benefits that the use of these surplus materials as a learning tool has brought to children in Early Childhood Education and Primary Education. It was seen that the project was very enriching for the minors; it made it possible for them to project their symbolic world (from a perspective of enjoyment), and opened the door to their creativity as well as to collaboration with peers, and each according to his or her own possibilities had the opportunity to discover the different characteristics of the objects and the relationships among them.

The conference will be held on the Faculty’s Eskoriatza campus. The event will begin at 3:00 p.m. and will be open to the public, however, those interested must register in advance.

Discarded materials as a way to learn about the world

The Biziberritu project is based on the fact that recyclable materials can be very interesting for the development of students’ knowledge of the physical world. In fact, in the opinion of university experts, “the more undefined or unstructured the material, the more possibilities to have more varied experiences and reach richer conclusions.” In addition, the use of recycled materials also offers many possibilities for creation and deactivates competition among students, which has a positive impact on the self-esteem of the students, since the artifacts they create cannot be judged or valued according to a single model. In addition, unstructured materials multiply the possibilities for play and play itself is a fundamental tool for symbolic development.
