Mikel Iturbe, professor-researcher at Mondragon Unibertsitatea, has participated in a roundtable on cybersecurity organised by the newspaper DEIA, alongside experts in the field such as Asier Martínez, Head of CSIRT Services of the Basque Cybersecurity Centre (BCSC);  Javier Aparicio, Director of Systems and Cybersecurity of i68 Zucchetti Group; Aiert Azueta, CEO of BeClever; and Jesús García, Director for the Northern Territory of MGS Seguros.

In a scenario in which cyberattacks are increasingly frequent and more sophisticated, cybersecurity is revealed as a competitive advantage for companies. In relation to this, Mikel Iturbe explained that, in the field of threats, the leap is both quantitative and qualitative. “Quantitatively, we are moving towards full interconnectivity, and that gives us more exposure. This also leads to the qualitative leap, consisting of very sophisticated, highly profitable business models. They are true crime syndicates.” In addition, Iturbe evaluated the trajectory of over 10 years of work in this field, endorsed by Mondragon Unibertsitatea, “although it was very hard in the beginning, because industrial companies did not see that need. Fortunately, medium-sized and large companies are already seeking to ensure not only their information systems, but also those of production.”

Investing on training in cybersecurity

Mondragon Unibertsitatea has been working for years on specific training in cybersecurity to face the needs of society and the demand for new professionals in the sector. In this sense, the university has a Master’s degree in the field of Cybersecurity, which is taught in Donostia, and the first promotion of the Master’s Degree in Data Analysis, Cybersecurity and Cloud Computing will be taught in Arrasate.

Thus, it is committed to research and innovation in cybersecurity as a means of creating new businesses and its application in fields where there is a great need, such as industry and the Internet of Things (IoT). Regarding the current reality of training in cybersecurity, Iturbe notes that “today, the demand from companies is infinitely greater than the offer of professionals trained in the subject given by universities.” “From standpoint of training, our option is to expand that offer, as more and more specific profiles are being required.”

Apart from being a teacher, Mikel Iturbe is also a member of Data Analysis and Cybersecurity research group at the Faculty of Engineering of Mondragon Unibertsitatea, which allows him to work for companies and get to know first-hand the future challenges related to his subject.
