Gonzalo Abad, researcher at the Higher Polytechnic School, has published the book Mathematical Model Equations in Stationary Reference Frame of Current Controls for Grid-Connected Converters, his third publication of this nature. The book addresses the study of electronic power converters that connect to the AC power grid, also called AC mains. To address the issue, readers will find a series of mathematical equations, which allow describing the joint behaviour of electronic power converters, along with their associated control algorithm and electrical connection components used. All this is contained in text aimed at professionals in the energy sector who work with specific devices and Master’s degree students specialising in the electricity sector in general, such as the students of our Master’s degree in Energy and Power Electronics.

The work has 120 pages in length and consists of 290 mathematical equations, in which the author seeks to “encourage readers working in this field to incorporate more these mathematical equations as a tool for analysis or design into their daily work”.

The book is now available in digital format, and can be obtained free of charge at the university library repository:

A long-term project

Abad frames the publication of the book in a line of work in which both he and his group have been immersed for some time. The objective of these works has been at all times the development of better methods of practice in the field of power electronics. Abad claims that “with this idea in mine, we realised some time ago that electronic power converters were not usually modelled or analysed mathematically, in AC. We then saw that, if analysed them in AC, we could incorporate a series of more powerful assessments, which would ultimately allow us to design and materialise better power electronic converters for the heap commercial devices we have mentioned before. Having great faith in this goal, we launched ourselves into this project.” After carrying out the process, Abad and the co- book’ author, Ander de Marcos, deduced that it was possible to synthesise it and record it in writing in a book. Ander de Marcos is currently a student of the Master’s degree in Energy and Power Electronics at Mondragon Unibertsitatea, having been in charge of launching the experimental platform in which mathematical equations have been validated, as well as obtaining experimental ana assessment results.

A trajectory linked to research

Gonzalo Abad has been developing research and transfer projects with the Mondragon Unibertsitatea model for over 18 years. At this time, he has worked with a number of students, professors, workers and professionals from a large number of companies, such as Ingeteam, Ikerlan, CAF, and Orona, among many others. In addition, this book is the third one published in his trajectory. According to the author, it is different in an essential aspect, since unlike on the previous occasions, it seeks to make a novel contribution that goes beyond the current state of the art.
