The Sum Bilbao 19 Conference was held on 20 and 21 February with different agents involved in sustainable urban mobility, including the Signal Processing and Communications team of Mondragon Unibertsitatea. The participants who came from the Polytechnic School were especially active in the presentations on technology and innovation, sharing experiences with leading agents such as Irizar (an electric bus manufacturer) and Kapsch (a technology provider). The team participating in the conference highlights the opportunity that it has given to interact with collaborating entities in the field, especially in the field of smart mobility, one of the main research lines of this group.

A broad line of research

Specifically, the Signal Processing and Communications team of the Higher Polytechnic School is currently working on the development of communication protocols of transport systems, with the aim of ensuring the development of Intelligent Transport Systems in the field of Smart Mobility.

So far, in-vehicle wireless solutions have been developed, facilitating more efficient driving and evolving an internal communication system of the vehicle itself (the CAN bus), to ensure autonomous navigation using GPS. The team also develops and actively participates in standardisation activities of the ITS-G5 wireless communication protocol for road safety. Additionally, steps have been taken in the research on autonomous driving of trains, evolving in the autonomous manoeuvring of the composition of tramps, and in the development of a reliable system of communications of emergency warnings.  In the latter, the Signal Processing and Communications team and Mondragon Goi Eskola Politeknikoa have a long-term research agreement with the CAF group and, particularly, with the company CAF Power and Automation.
