During the second semester of the 3rd year of the Degree in Eco-technology in Industrial Processes Engineering, they welcomed Dr Andreas Sterzing, from the prestigious Fraunhofer-Institut für Werkzeugmaschinen und Umformtechnik (IWU), from Germany. 

During his stay, Dr Sterzing offered a presentation on the technologies for production and forming of materials, focusing on the Industry 4.0. The presentation emphasised how the monitoring and control of processes can increase the efficiency of processes, since, by reducing consumption and emissions, it also increases their reliability and robustness. 

One of the main pillars of the degree in Engineering in Ecotechnologies in Industrial Processes is based on reducing the environmental impact of the industry and thus, the workshop was directly aligned with the profile of the students. The students of this degree observe the industry and traditional engineering with the mission of making it cleaner and more sustainable. The promotion of new manufacturing technologies, analysis of the different types of materials to determine the most suitable one, optimisation of the design of products and the treatment of contaminated water and air are aspects where engineering also has a role to play, and the students of this degree specialise in them. 

Fraunhofer-Institut für Werkzeugmaschinen und Umformtechnik (IWU)

Within it, the IWU has over 1,000 employees and an annual budget of €63 million, more than a third of which come from private contracts with companies. Its fields of research are in line with the needs of society: health, safety, communication, mobility, energy, and the environment.
