The winning projects are by students from Arrasate and Irun from Mondragon Unibertsitatea, and are aimed at blind people being able to recognize buses, obtain the necessary information in public service spaces or enjoy an accessible video game

ONCE, in collaboration with Mondragon Team Academy, the entrepreneurship unit of the Faculty of Business at Mondragon Unibertsitatea, and the support of the Department of Social Policies of the Basque Government, has failed the first edition of the Gure Begirada Contest, which has been aimed at students of legal age who are studying middle or higher degrees at universities in the Basque Autonomous Community.

This first edition has been aimed at students from different disciplines to work providing solutions to different challenges that people with visual disabilities face on a daily basis, working as a team, developing skills such as innovation, creativity or critical thinking.

The I Gure Begirada Contest has awarded the 1st prize to the team formed by students of the Master's Degree in Strategic Design of Products and Services at Mondragón Unibertsitatea, in Arrasate, made up of Sergio Suanzes, Laura Tellería and Ana Urquidi for their project entitled "Paloma" and that proposes “maintaining communication with the user through NFC technology, thanks to which, by means of a camera with recognition technology, the device would be able to recognize the buses and emit a light when the transport that the user wishes to take approaches. ”.

The team formed by students of the LEINN Degree (Leadership, Entrepreneurship and Innovation) from Mondragon Unibertsitatea de Irún, made up of Ibai Magunacelaya and Alex Téllez for their project entitled "Murder in the dark", consisting of "a game totally inclusive for sighted and blind people where police and mystery elements are included, ensuring user fun, and leaving aside the barriers or obstacles to spend time in diversity".

Finally, the team formed by LEINN Degree Students, also from Irún, made up of Maider Colongue-Bourgeois, Nicolás Sánchez Goñi, Leire Remírez Campo and Laura Ochoa Sadaba, obtained the 3rd prize, thanks to the work that under the title of “Feel it System "Proposes the" creation of a device with Bluetooth and NFC system to be launched in those places where the screens that take turns and only emit sounds lacking the necessary information for blind or low vision people, in order to emit signals through vibrations and voice instructions, improving the experience as well as monitoring and maintaining it. "

Projects aimed at improving the lives of blind people

The jury was formed by the President of the Territorial Council of ONCE-Euskadi, Rafael Ledesma; the Territorial Delegate of ONCE-Euskadi, Juan Carlos Andueza; the Director of Social Services of the Basque Government, Marian Olabarrieta; the Investor in AiPower Venture Builder (Startups Incubator), Ibon Mintegi; and the Coordinator of the Bilbao Berrikuntza Faktoria and Team Coach of Mondragon Team Academy, Ziortza Olano.

The defense and presentation of the projects submitted to the contest were carried out electronically and the Jury issued its decision considering criteria such as the innovative nature of the project, its social and digital impact, or its technical and economic viability, among others.

In the I Gure Begirada University Contest, a total of 157 students enrolled, who, organized into a total of 47 teams, presented 36 projects. All the participants had to respond to three challenges: how to improve the accessibility of public transport; how to improve the accessibility of the visual information screens that establish shifts; and how to create a fully accessible mobile video game.

The I Gure Begirada University Contest, in addition to awarding cash prizes to the winners, encourages them to develop them and put them into practice for the benefit of the blind or low vision group.
